Invisalign vs. Byte

Dentists Who Are Friendly and Knowledgeable

At A+ Family Dentistry in San Diego, CA, we understand that choosing the right orthodontic or Braces treatment is a big decision. Clear aligners like Invisalign and At-Home aligners, like Byte, offer a discreet way to straighten teeth but differ significantly in their approach, effectiveness, and level of professional care. If you're considering clear aligners, this guide will help you understand why Invisalign, with its superior results and hands-on monitoring, is the better choice for achieving your ideal smile.

Invisalign® is a modern orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to straighten your smile. There are no unsightly and uncomfortable “brackets” like the ones used in traditional braces.

How Invisalign & At-Home Aligner Work

INVISALIGN® TREATMENT IN SAN DIEGO, POWAY & SORRENTO VALLEY, CA

Both Invisalign and At-Home aligners are clear aligners to shift teeth into their desired positions. However, the key difference lies in how these treatments are planned and monitored:

  • Invisalign: Invisalign doesn’t use putty impressions so the impressions are made electronically.  This insures high accuracy that the tray fits to your teeth.  An accurate fits allows for the tray to accurately move your teeth.  An unfit tray would make the teeth move the wrong way.  Invisalign involves a personalized treatment plan created by your dentist at A+ Family Dentistry. You’ll receive a series of aligners, each designed to make precise, controlled movements. Regular check-ins ensure your progress stays on track and any necessary refinements can be made.  Sometimes spaces need to be made so the dentist can pull your teeth back.   This procedure is called “Interproximal reduction”.  If this is not done, you can end up with a “bulky” smile or teeth that look “too far out”.    Also, if the teeth are too far out, it can cause gum recession and boneloss.  With At-Home Clear aligners, Interproximal reduction is not possible.  It must be performed by a professional dentist.

  • At-Home Clear Aligners: As an at-home aligner option, At-Home Clear aligners relies on putty impressions.   The tray for the impression can be big and difficult to take.  You will have to take them yourself.  A putty impression is 10 times less accurate.  While this approach may seem convenient, it can potentially lead to unpredictable results, improper teeth movement, and even long-term oral health issues.  Also, a trained dentist does not monitor the progress so what can happen?  The teeth may move the wrong way, you can get mobile teeth, boneloss around the teeth, and also recession.  It may be okay for limited cases, however, with more difficult cases, it is recommended to seek a professional.

Cost & Convenience

Is At-Home Clear Aligners Really Cheaper?

At-Home Clear Aligner’s marketing emphasizes affordability, but when you compare overall value, Invisalign comes out ahead.

 •   Invisalign offers flexible payment plans, insurance coverage, and in-person monitoring, ensuring you get the best care for your investment.

 •  At-Home Clear Aligner’s lower initial cost might seem appealing, but any complications or corrections could lead to additional expenses.

 •  The hands-on support with Invisalign ensures that any issues are addressed immediately, preventing long-term problems that could cost even more to fix.

Why Invisalign is the Better Choice

At-home Clear Aligners convenience may seem appealing, but its lack of professional oversight means a higher risk of misaligned bites, gum recession, and unsatisfactory results. Invisalign, on the other hand, ensures every stage of your treatment is guided by experts, reducing the likelihood of complications.

Expert Supervision for Best Results
Invisalign is administered by skilled dentists like Dr. Justene Doan, Dr. Roger Tran, Dr. Janice Doan, and Dr. Sigafoos at A+ Family Dentistry. This hands-on approach guarantees a more predictable and successful outcome. With in-person evaluations, adjustments can be made to ensure optimal teeth movement and alignment.

Safer & More Effective for Complex Cases
Unlike At-Home Clear Aligner, which is mostly suited for mild alignment issues, Invisalign can treat a wider range of cases, including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Severe misalignment requires professional assessment to prevent long-term dental complications.

Fewer Risks, More Confidence
Patients using at-home aligners like At-Home Clear Aligner’s risk developing improper bite alignment, which can lead to jaw pain, difficulty chewing, and even TMJ disorders. With Invisalign, adjustments are made as needed, ensuring your teeth move correctly and safely, minimizing risks.

More Comfortable Experience
Invisalign aligners are crafted from SmartTrack™ material, designed for a snug, comfortable fit. Unlike At-Home Clear Aligners, which uses generic plastic, Invisalign’s proprietary technology provides a better patient experience with reduced discomfort and improved control over tooth movement.

Retainers & Post-Treatment Care
Once treatment is complete, Invisalign patients receive custom Vivera retainers, ensuring long-term retention of their results. At-Home Clear Aligners offers post-treatment retainers, but without in-office follow-up care, relapse is more common.

San Diego Invisalign® – Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does Invisalign treatment take compared to At-Home Clear Aligners?

Invisalign typically takes 12-18 months, while At-Home Clear Aligners claims to work in 4-6 months. However, At-Home Clear Aligners is only suitable for minor corrections, while Invisalign can address a wide range of orthodontic issues effectively.

  • Can At-Home Clear Aligners fix severe alignment issues like Invisalign?

Invisalign® works by using a series of clear, custom-made aligners that gradually shift your teeth into the desired position. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks, and then you switch to the next set in the series.

  • Is remote monitoring with At-Home Clear Aligners as effective as in-office visits for Invisalign?

No. With At-home Clear Aligners, adjustments are done remotely, and any complications may go unnoticed. Invisalign provides direct, hands-on supervision from experienced dentists, ensuring safer and more effective treatment.

  • Are Invisalign aligners more comfortable than At-Home Clear Aligners?

Yes. Invisalign aligners are made with SmartTrack™ material, offering a superior fit and greater comfort compared to the generic plastic used by At-home Clear Aligners.

  • Do At-Home Clear Aligners work as well as Invisalign?

For simple cases, At-home Clear Aligners may offer some improvement, but Invisalign is designed to correct more complex dental misalignments while maintaining proper bite function and alignment over time.

  • Does Invisalign cost more than At-Home Clear Aligners?

While Invisalign may have a higher upfront cost, it provides greater value through personalized treatment, hands-on monitoring, and long-term results, reducing the risk of costly post-treatment corrections.

  • Does Invisalign hurt?

Some patients feel mild pressure when switching to a new aligner set, but this discomfort typically fades in a day or two.

  • Can I eat and drink with Invisalign®?

You should remove your Invisalign® aligners when eating or drinking anything other than water. This is to prevent staining or damaging the aligners. It is important to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.
