These services are crucial when it comes to detecting problems before they become serious, keeping you healthy. During an exam and X-ray appointment, your dentist can find cavities, assess your risk for gum disease and tooth decay, and look for warning signs of more serious issues, like oral cancer. The professionals at A+ Family Dentistry encourage our patients to have a dental exam at least once every six months.

The Purpose of Dental Exams and X-Rays

A dental exam allows the dentist to determine whether or not your teeth and gums are healthy. The exam gives them the opportunity to see problems with the teeth and gums in earlier stages, before they become larger issues. X-rays provide dentists with the ability to examine hard-to-see areas in the back of the mouth and inside the teeth so that they can detect tooth decay and other problems. Dental exams and X-rays are important tools for your preventative dental care.

Do I Need a Dental Exam?

If it’s been more than 6 months since your last dental exam, it’s a great idea for you to call our office and schedule one. If you’re in a tremendous amount of pain or know that one of your teeth has been recently chipped or cracked, you should get a dental exam right away. To get a full picture of your dental health, like when you’re visiting a new dentist for the first time, an exam may be necessary.

The Process For Exams and X-Rays

Wondering what to expect when you visit our office for a dental exam and X-ray appointment? The process is simple and will typically go as follows:

If you’re getting X-rays during your visit, it will likely be one of the first things we get done. The hygienist or assistant will have you bite down on a small tab and position the X-ray machine next to your mouth.

The hygienist will then step out of the room to push the button and take the X-ray.

Once the X-rays are taken, the dentist will review them for any signs of decay or dental problems and review them with you.

The rest of the exam will include the dentist doing a visual examination of your teeth and gums, as well as your head and neck.

The dentist will also have you bite down to check your teeth and their alignment.

Finally, any recommended treatments will be discussed and then you’ll be on your way!
