Save Your Child’s Smile: Methods of Pediatric Restorative Dentistry

Dr. Gary Sigafoos • Oct 21, 2015

Pediatric cosmetic dentistry continuously presents a challenge for many dentists. Several factors have to be taken into consideration when treating young patients, and they may include behavioral issues, the patient’s ability to tolerate the treatment and the level of understanding the necessity of the dental therapy.

Severely decayed primary dentition is still a prevalent issue in pediatric dentistry, whether in practices located in San Diego or elsewhere in the state. Despite the use of fluoridated water and extensive patient education, many children and young adolescents experience childhood caries. Because of great advances in research and technology, pediatric dentistry can now successfully correct dental discrepancies and maintain patient’s oral health. Full coverage restorations are now available allowing the young patients to regain their ability to speak and eat comfortably. These include the following types of restorations: (1) stainless steel crowns, (2) zirconia crowns, and (3) composite strip crowns.

Stainless steel crowns are valued for their durability and superb retention. They are typically used for grossly decayed posterior primary teeth, mostly as a temporary measure of maintaining the space until the eruption of adult teeth. The added advantage includes low cost for the procedure and materials and is often chosen by parents as an adequate measure of treatment.

Zirconia crowns are fabricated from a solid ceramic material that provides exceptional aesthetics and is implemented on anterior teeth. This method of treatment is not recommended for children who exhibit signs of bruxism (tooth grinding and clenching) as the material is not as durable as stainless steel restorations.

Composite strip crowns are made of resin that creates good aesthetic value, but less retention and durability. This technique is often chosen for children who are in a transitory period between primary and permanent dentition and are not expected to wear the composite crowns for a prolonged period of time.

Aesthetic full coverage methods restore the appearance of compromised dentition along with durability and function. The success of the treatment greatly depends on the cooperation of the patient often related to their age. Very young patients may not be able tolerate the procedure, and may require additional anesthesia. Young adolescents are typically emotionally well-equipped and are able to endure the length of the procedure.

Pediatric procedures performed by a dentist in San Diego are generally less expensive, and in many cases, they are covered by the insurance provider as they are considered a part of preventive dentistry. Routine dental visits may help the young patients to acquire positive oral habits and alleviate the possibility of rampant caries and extensive dental treatments in the future.
