Need to Replace Lost Teeth? Here’s how Dental Implants Fill the Void

Dr. Janice Doan • Aug 02, 2015

Over the last few decades, dental implants have revolutionized the world of dentistry, especially in the aspect of tooth or teeth replacements. Sometimes, having missing teeth can cause the face to project a collapsed appearance, making the person look a bit older than his actual age, which, in turn, could make him more reluctant to smile. Getting a replacement could present a more youthful appearance and an improved smile.

The concept of using implants in dentistry probably dates as far back as the Mayan civilization, but maybe due to the Mayans’ lack of access to contemporary equipment and facilities, they probably weren’t too successful. Today, implants consist of root replacements which serve as a durable foundation for the attached crown. It is designed to fit so naturally that it is quite difficult to tell which tooth is real and which isn’t.

Implants are safe and are not susceptible to decays or gum diseases. As with the majority of treatment modalities in today’s dentistry, implant dentistry requires extensive expertise in planning, crown fabrication and precise surgical placement; it is a careful amalgam of both art and science.

How Do They Work?

Implants are surgically fused to your jawbone so that the crowns, dentures or bridges that are mounted won’t inadvertently slip off or shift its position during your normal activities. This is especially useful when you’re speaking or eating, because there’s probably nothing as embarrassing as feeling your replacement teeth falling off while having a conversation. Also, the secure fit makes the implants feel more natural in your mouth than conventional dentures.

As appealing as it sounds, implants may not be for everyone, though. This is because you must have healthy gums, as well as an adequate bone structure that can support the implant. That is one of the reasons why dentists always harp on the importance of maintaining proper oral health care.

Types of Dental Implants

The American Academy of Periodontology has approved two types of implants and considers them safe.

  • Endosteal implants — fitted directly into the jawbone. After the gum tissue heals, a second surgery connects a post to the original implant.
  • Subperiosteal implants — consist of a metal frame attached to the jawbone below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes firmly fixed to the bone.
  • If you are looking to get an implant in San Diego, keep in mind that it requires teamwork between you and your dentist or implant surgeon. Trusty and experienced dental practices, like A+ Family Dentistry, offer 0% financing and other amenities to help you replace those missing teeth the professional and affordable way.
