People like it if their smile looks great. The problem is that it can be hard to ensure that teeth remain in good condition. Age, wear and tear, and the misfortune of birth can all contribute to teeth not looking their best. If you want a smile that will leave an impression, you can call up an experienced San Diego dentist like Dr. Justene Doan, DDS of A+ Family Dentistry to help.

Teeth Whitening

Stained and discolored teeth are really bad for anyone’s chances of a pretty smile. Thankfully, an experienced Poway cosmetic dentist would be able to help you with these problems. Teeth can get stained for various reasons; specific foods and drink as well as natural ageing are the prime culprits. To restore the pearly-white hue of your ivories, whitening procedures are available.

Teeth whitening works by applying bleaching solutions to the teeth. Most of these solutions contain some form of hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth. Though it is possible to get teeth whitening done at home, in-office solutions are much better. Usually taking several weekly appointments, in-office whitening is done by placing dental trays containing the solution on your teeth. Your dentist would place a protective coating over your gums beforehand to ensure that they won’t get endangered. A usual session can last from 30 to 90 minutes.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are another way that cosmetic dentists can help in ensuring a pristine smile. Crowns are usually needed when a tooth has become seriously discolored to a point that even whitening wouldn’t be able to help, or if it gets damaged in some obvious way. Another reason to get a crown is to protect a tooth weakened by decay. Most crowns are made of resin or porcelain to match surrounding teeth; however, metal crowns made of gold and other metals are also possible.

Installing a dental crown involves preparing the tooth by the application of anesthesia, after which the tooth is shaved down so that it can accept a crown. If the tooth is damaged either by decay or by outside impact, a filling is applied to give the tooth enough strength to hold a crown. Afterwards, an impression is made; a temporary crown is then placed over the prepared tooth, while the impression is sent to a dental laboratory to create a permanent one, which is installed upon completion.

These are just two examples of how cosmetic dentistry can help those with damaged teeth. Consult with your trusted practitioner today to find out other approaches that might be able to help you.
